The "Successful Self Direction" Challenge

“If we don't realize that we're part of the solution, then we're part of the problem.”

The Successful Self Direction (SSD) program was started in Kokomo Indiana to prove that there is a solution to the crime problem. That solution is education.

Ignorance is the cause of crimes; the more knowledge increases, the more crimes will diminish. Communities must think of preventing crimes rather than rigorously punishing them.

“It is possible to educate the masses so effectively that they will avoid and shrink from perpetrating crimes, so that the crime itself will appear to them as the greatest chastisement, the utmost condemnation and torment.”

We all “teach” daily in the community. By our actions, we set an example for others, good or bad. SSD helps a person undersand the importance of setting the right example, for his growth and for the growth of the community.

We would like to give each member of the community, age twelve or older, the opportunity to take the Successful Self Direction program.

To significantly reduce crime, there will have to be a concerted community effort. “If we don't realize that we're part of the solution, then we're part of the problem.” Courts, schools, law enforcement, social service agencies, churches, business leaders, civic organizations, and ordinary citizens must commit to this goal and cooperate with each other to accomplish it.
